Mental Illnesses - Schizophrenia

A chronic, severe, disabling brain disease.

“Oh, and I certainly don't suffer from schizophrenia. I quite enjoy it. And so do I."

  • Distorted Perceptions of Reality
confusion, anxiety, paranoia
  • Hallucinations and Illusions
while auditory hallucinations are the most common, hallucinations can occur in any form (olfactory, gustatory, visual, and tactile)
  • Delusions
false beliefs conjured by one's disorder; paranoid- type delusions (approx. one third of schizophrenic sufferers have this type of delusion) and delusions of grandeur
  • Disordered Thinking
rapid thoughts and concentration issues
  • Emotional Expression
often show a "lack: of emotion, socially withdrawn
  • Normal Versus Abnormal
some sufferers may be able to appear "normal" through medication and often therapy, though some may be able to through personal practice

"Worldwide about 1 percent of the population is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and approximately 1.2% of Americans (3.2 million) have the disorder. About 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with schizophrenia this year around the world. In the United States, this means about 100,000 people will be diagnosed, which translates to 7.2 people per 1,000 or about 21,000 people within a city of 3 million who are likely to be suffering from schizophrenia."
-- Rashmi Nemade, Ph.D

Subtypes

  • Paranoid
prominently auditory hallucinations and delusional thoughts (this is the most common form)

  • Disorganized
impaired emotions and thought processes; hallucinations and delusions are less prominent
  • Catatonic
impaired movement; often immobile or resistant to change appearance
  • Undifferentiated
symptoms not formed significantly enough to fit into a particular subtype
  • Residual
one no longer displays prominent symptoms of the illness

Psychopaths - Alyssa Bustamante

PSYCHOPATHY IS A PERSONALITY TRAIT OR DISORDER CHARACTERIZED PARTLY BY ENDURING ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR, A DIMINISHED CAPACITY FOR EMPATHY OR REMORSE, AND POOR BEHAVIORAL CONTROLS.

Alyssa Bustamante

Born January 28, 1994

Background

Bustamante had shown signs of psychological problems early on; she has a series of drug and alcohol charges. She attempted suicide by pain killers and has a history of self mutilation and depression. She was institutionalized after her suicide attempt and was put on Prozac. She continued to receive (unsuccessful) outpatient and inpatient therapy.

The Murder

Elizabeth Olten, aged 9, Bustamante's neighbor

A week before the murder, Bustamante dug two graves. It is rumored one was for her victim and one was for her; another rumor is that she was planning to kill her two younger brothers but jumped at the chance to kill Olten. On October 21, 2009.  Bustamante strangled Olten and stabbed her repeatedly as well as slit her throat and wrists.

Aftermath

Bustamante killed just to see what it felt like. She had no other reason and left Olten covered with leaves in a shallow grave just to satisfy her curiosity. She was sentenced to life with possible parole.

"I just f***ing killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm," Bustamante wrote... She later added: "It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."

Psychopaths - Richard Chase

Psychopathy is a personality trait or disorder characterized partly by enduring antisocial behavior, a diminished capacity for empathy or remorse, and poor behavioral controls.

Richard Chase

"The Vampire of Sacramento"

(May 23, 1950 – December 26, 1980)

    Background & Early Signs

Abused by his mother as a child, Chase exhibited signs of the Macdonald triad (a set of three behavioral characteristics that were said to lead to often violent tendencies) as early as age 10.  As a young adult, Chase developed hypochondria. He would claim that at times his heart would "stop beating" and had strange beliefs i.e.: that his cranial bones had become separated -- so he shaved his head to watch the "activity."
Chase left his mother's house believing that she was trying to poison him and moved in with friends. We was frequently intoxicated and had peculiar habits that led his roommates to move out. Chase's habits only began to grow even more strange. He would kill and disembowel animals which he would often devour raw, or would make strange concoctions of their organs in a blender to drink. He rationalized with himself that this strange ritual would keep his heart from shrinking.

Institutionalization

Chase was institutionalized after contracting blood poisoning from injecting rabbit's blood into his veins. In the hospital, Chase would often be found with blood smeared about his mouth -- it was later discovered he was drinking the blood of birds and throwing their corpses out of his hospital room window; this led staff to begin calling him "Dracula." Chase was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and was guided through a series of treatments including psychotropic drugs. He was released to his mother once it was determined he wasn't a threat to society. His mother decided he was fine and began to wean him off of his medication.

Victims

Ambrose Griffith (drive-by shooting)

Teresa Wallin (shot three times)

Evelyn Miroth (shot - necrophilia + cannibalism)

x
Danny Meredith (shot)

Jason Miroth, Evelyn's 6-year-old son (shot)

David Ferreira, Evelyn's 22-month-old nephew (shot)

Aftermath

Though he was clearly not sane, he was not pardoned with a life sentence. He was found on six counts of first degree murder and was sentenced to die in a gas chamber. While in prison, he frightened his fellow inmates with his bizarre and violent nature and they often encouraged him to commit suicide. He shared with guards his fears of Nazis and UFO's and claimed that, though he did kill, he had to in order to stay alive. He believed that any other person would kill for the same reason. Eventually Chase committed suicide by prison doctor-prescribed antidepressants that he had been hoarding.

Psychopaths - Charles Manson

Psychopathy is a personality trait or disorder characterized partly by enduring antisocial behavior, a diminished capacity for empathy or remorse, and poor behavioral controls.

Charles Manson

Early Life and First Offenses

Born on November 12, 1934 (now aged 78), Manson was born into world to an unmarried 16-year-old mother who, at first, called him 'no name.' She was a heavy drinker who reportedly sold him for beer to a waitress, only to come back for him a few days later.  Manson began his criminal career with several strings of burglaries.
He was sent to a juvenile center, from which he escaped only to be put in another similar center.  Less than a week after being placed there, he escaped & committed two armed robberies along with another escapee. He was then sent to a boys school where at which he claimed to have been sexually abused. His youth was filled with numerous more offenses and at age 13, was deemed aggressively antisocial and illiterate with an IQ of 109.

   * Though Manson orchestrated the murders, he never actually has been convicted of killing anyone himself.  He did, however, shoot Bernard Crowe over a bad drug deal.

Helter Skelter

Manson believed the Beatles had songs predicting Armageddon; he believed it would arise from an apocalyptic war of races (black/white.) He also believed the biblical book Revelation proved his theories.
Look at the songs: songs sung all over the world by the young love. It ain't nothin' new... It's written in... Revelation, all about the four angels programming the holocaust... the four angels looking for the fifth angel to lead the people into the pit of fire... right out to Death Valley. It's all in black and white, in the White Album - white, so there ain't no mistakin' the color.
- Charles Manson
Manson "translated" many of the Beatles lyrics. i.e.:
Lyric: Blackbird singing in the dead of night/ Take these broken wings and learn to fly/ All your life/ You were only waiting for this moment to arise.
Meaning: The black man is going to arise and overthrow the white man. The Beatles are programming blacks to rise.

Aftermath

Manson was convicted in 1971 and initially given the death penalty.  However, in 1972, this charge was revoked and he was given life behind bars.
