Background
Bustamante had shown signs of psychological problems early on; she has a series of drug and alcohol charges. She attempted suicide by pain killers and has a history of self mutilation and depression. She was institutionalized after her suicide attempt and was put on Prozac. She continued to receive (unsuccessful) outpatient and inpatient therapy.
The Murder

A week before the murder, Bustamante dug two graves. It is rumored one was for her victim and one was for her; another rumor is that she was planning to kill her two younger brothers but jumped at the chance to kill Olten. On October 21, 2009. Bustamante strangled Olten and stabbed her repeatedly as well as slit her throat and wrists.
Aftermath
Bustamante killed just to see what it felt like. She had no other reason and left Olten covered with leaves in a shallow grave just to satisfy her curiosity. She was sentenced to life with possible parole.
"I just f***ing killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm," Bustamante wrote... She later added: "It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."
